Trying New Hobbies and Getting Out of Our Comfort Zones (Without Totally Freaking Out)

In the words of Doechii— “I have the right to be bad at something when I first start.”

Okay, real talk—have you ever wanted to try something new as an adult but immediately talked yourself out of it? Like, who do I think I am taking up pottery/dance/Brazilian jujitsu at this big age? Same. You are so not alone.

This week, I’ve been thinking (and chatting) about the whole idea of trying new things and how stepping out of your comfort zone is... well, way easier said than done.

Our Journey with New Hobbies (a.k.a. Flailing Around in a Fun Way)

Let me tell you—starting something from scratch as an adult is kind of terrifying but also kind of amazing. Georgia (my co-host and fellow hobby-hopper) recently got into Brazilian jujitsu, and she was super nervous at first. But once she actually gave it a shot, she realized she didn’t need to be a black belt on day one. It was more about showing up and learning something new.

Meanwhile, I’ve tried to channel my inner backup dancer and hit a few dance classes—and let’s just say the mirror wasn’t always kind, but the laughs were totally worth it. Sometimes it's less about "nailing it" and more about the joy of doing something just because.

Why Is Starting Something New So Scary?

Let’s be real—trying new things can bring up all kinds of weird insecurities we thought we left behind in high school. There’s that annoying voice in our heads saying we need to be instantly good at everything or else we shouldn’t even try. Georgia put it perfectly: as adults, we get so caught up in appearing competent that we’d rather not try at all than risk looking awkward.

And don’t even get me started on the labels we picked up growing up—like “not sporty” or “bad at art.” It’s wild how those little comments can sneak into our adult brains and stop us from exploring things that might actually bring us joy.

So… How Do You Even Start?

Here’s what’s been helping me: I start small. I ask dumb questions. I let myself be bad at stuff. Honestly, it’s so freeing. It’s not about becoming a pro; it’s about having a good time, learning something new, and letting yourself be a beginner again.

Georgia and I both agree—fear is often just a sign that you care. And that’s a beautiful thing. It means you’re alive, curious, and growing.

Let’s Keep It Light, Shall We?

At the end of the day, trying new things shouldn’t feel like a chore or a test. It’s meant to be fun - Whether you totally fall in love with a hobby or just walk away with a funny story.

Thanks for hanging out with us on this little journey. If you’re feeling inspired, maybe text that friend who’s been wanting to try something new and plan to do it together. And if you loved this convo, give us a follow over on Insta: @GetItTogether_Pod 💜

Because honestly? Life’s too short to stay in your comfort zone.
